Rake in the Rewards: Fall Lawn Care Made Simple!

Have the dog days of summer wreaked havoc on your lawn? Summer drought and heat can severely damage even the healthiest yard of grass. Now that the air temperature is cooler and the mornings moister with dew, fall is the perfect time to reestablish it!
Overseeding a Damaged Lawn
Chesterton Feed & Garden Center is committed to helping you establish a healthy, dense, green lawn this fall.
1. A soil sample will determine the PH of your soil and if an application of lime or sulfur is needed.
2. Mow the lawn shorter than normal.
3. Use a hard rake to remove thatch buildup and loosen the top layer of native soil. 4. Core aerate compacted soil if necessary.
5. Topdress with Garden Magic weed free topsoil or manure, new lawn starter fertilizer, and any additive to adjust PH. Mix with a top layer of native soil.
6. Spread grass seed and lightly rake it in no deeper than ¼ inch. 7. Cover the freshly seeded area with a thin layer of weed-free seed cover to discourage birds from consuming the seed and help hold in the moisture between waterings.
8. Water frequently, more than once a day, until the grass is up and growing. Never water late in the day or at night, to avoid encouraging fungus growth.
Reduce the frequency of watering to once a week once the grass is established; however, increase the amount of water to encourage deep, strong root growth.
10. Fertilize in late fall with a fall fertilizer to build strong roots and winter hardiness.
Seed Selection
Not every lawn will require the same type of grass seed. Different seed options are available for various areas, including sun, shade, and dry spot for dry areas. Allow our knowledgeable staff to help you select the seed that best suits your conditions.
